Highlighting the Best of Modernism Week 2024
We’ll be making all of the stops during your VIP experience! Some of the biggest stand-out homes designed by incredible architects and designers you won’t want to miss. Coupled with drinks, snacks and entertainment, this year’s tour will be one to remember!
House of Tomorrow
Completed in 1960 and featured two years later in Look magazine’s “The Way Out Way of Life” — in which it was dubbed House of Tomorrow — the Ladera Circle masterpiece was leased for a year in 1966 by Colonel Tom Parker. Elvis and Priscilla decompressed here on occasion during that time.
As the floor plan reveals, architect William Krisel (Palmer & Krisel) designed this luxurious family home with four floating geometric pavilions on three levels under one boomerang-shape roof. State-of-the-art electronics control the indoor/outdoor lighting, temperature, and irrigation.
Villa Sierra “That Pink Door House”
Welcome behind those famous pink doors in the Indian Canyons neighborhood to discover all that the playful Villa Sierra by James McNaughton reveals in its colorful take on midcentury modern Hollywood Regency design.
This is your opportunity to take in all the colorful surprises the Villa Sierra compound offers beyond its Instagram-famous pink doors! This iconic midcentury desert ranch by TV set designer-turned-architect James H. McNaughton offers expansive public rooms of grand proportions and floor-to-ceiling windows that blur the boundary of inside and outside. You’ll enjoy taking in the manicured grounds, towering palm trees, and captivating mountain views which permeate the brilliantly designed open living space of this 5,300 square-foot home.
SHAG house
As the lead designer and creative director of this major remodel and expansion, the artist known as Shag has drawn upon his architectural studies and the aesthetic of his artwork to reimagine this classic 1958 home, originally designed by Desert Modern architects Palmer & Krisel for the Alexander Construction Company. Modernist fans will certainly recognize the core of the house, where Shag has preserved much of the original layout including the familiar 3-bedroom, 2-bath floor plan, as well as the tongue and groove ceilings. The kitchen and living rooms remain in their original location as does the fireplace.
While the center of the home’s layout remains the same, everything else has been updated, expanded, and transformed for today’s modern homeowner. Shag has created an entirely new exterior, offering grand curb appeal. The front entry has been expanded and the original breezeway has been converted into a swank party lounge.
Wexler ’54
Located in Deepwell Estates neighborhood, Wexler ‘54 is a quintessential example of post & beam residential design and is one of the first homes designed by master architects Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison of the famed Wexler & Harrison architecture firm.
Looking to retain the best of midcentury style and elegance for the homeowners, H3K Home + Design took the profile of the 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom home back to its roots while creating a home that supported today’s lifestyle inside and out. Celebrating the home’s elongated flat roof with walls of glass, they delightfully blurred the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, drawing the eye to the historic slump stone walls and wonderful pool area which exemplifies desert living and the midcentury modern experience.
