We had a chance to sit with Bobby Berk, host of Netflix “Queer Eye” and interior designer Paula Oblen to discuss Casa Tierra – Bobby’s latest project during Modernism Week 2022.
This unique rental vacation property deserved special attention in choosing the right material for the vast countertop and wall cladding applications this home required. Through multiple design, inspiration and education sessions, Paula and Bobby were able to choose the right materials for this project.
Willis’ role in any project is not to design, but to inspire, educate, solve, and eventually supply a curated offering of premium branded design materials for both interior and exterior spaces. I think we nailed it on this one!
Choosing the right materials.
“This project was a monster”, though Casa Tierra did get quite a makeover, Berk said he tried to keep as many of the original materials in place, including the terra cotta tiles throughout the house. Newer materials required a certain organic look and textured to compliment not only the existing decor, but also the unique Palm Desert landscape. Corian® Quartz, in various finishes, was used extensively throughout this property.
“The Corian® Quartz Dove Grey leathered finish gave
us this amazing organic feel” – Paula Oblen
It’s all about the outdoors.
The outdoor applications, including an outdoor kitchen/BBQ area and the outdoor bar and casida required a material the could withstand the deserts fluctuating temperatures as well as the beating sun. Lapitec® sintered stone was recommended by our material application specialists, as it was created for both interior and exterior use.
“To have a product like Lapitec® (sintered stone) that can
handle abuse was really important to us”
